Pilot won't stay lit, or the glass has gone hazy

That is the most common gas fireplace call here. Thermopile millivolt output drops with age. The pilot hood oxidizes. Soot bridges the flame sensor. Spiders spin webs inside pilot orifices, drawn to the odorant in the gas. Nine idle months a year makes all of this worse.

On sealed direct-vent inserts the glass comes out. Both faces get cleaned, and the rope gasket gets checked for crush and gaps. White film is usually sulfur deposit, not dirt. Ammonia cleaners etch ceramic glass permanently. Ember wool placed over burner ports is a frequent cause of black tipping and sooted logs.

Vented log sets in prefab or masonry fireboxes need the damper permanently clamped open. Plenty around here were never clamped. Logs shifted against the ports carbon up fast. Vent-free sets use an ODS pilot (compressed air only, never a wire brush).

Outside, we look at the prefab chase. Rusted chase covers drip onto the firebox top. Storm collar sealant dries and cracks. Low direct-vent terminations on stucco walls plug with eucalyptus litter and shrub growth.

If the insert model is long discontinued and the valve is failing, replacement parts may not exist. We will say so plainly.
