What a chimney cap replacement actually involves

The job starts with measurements taken on the roof, not guesses from the ground. On masonry stacks we measure the outside dimensions of the clay tile liner, plus the crown width if the cap will span it. The old cap comes off (usually seized fasteners, old sealant, or a rusted band). We wire-brush the seat, clear soot and debris from the flue top, then set and fasten the new cap. Sealant goes only where a joint needs it, not smeared around as a fix.

Two different jobs share this name. Pre-1950 brick and block chimneys take a single-flue or multi-flue cap. The 1970s to 2000s tract homes with framed, stucco-clad chases take a full chase cover instead. That cover needs a cross-break so water drains, a drip edge past the chase sides, and a storm collar fitted tight to the pipe. A small cap set on a flat rusted chase top solves nothing.
