What actually clogs a dryer vent, and how to check yours

Lint drops out where air slows down. That means elbows, long horizontal runs, and the last foot before the hood. A straight run through a rim joist rarely blocks. A run that climbs through a garage ceiling and turns twice usually does.

Housing stock decides the job. Postwar ranch homes on raised foundations vent out a sidewall in a few feet. Two-story homes built with the laundry upstairs often terminate at the roof, so the work is ladder work. Townhomes frequently push the duct across a garage ceiling. Older houses still have white vinyl flex behind the dryer, crushed flat against the wall. That gets replaced with rigid metal, not cleaned.

Test it before calling anyone. Start a timed cycle, go outside, hold your hand at the hood. Strong warm air means the path is open. Weak air, a flapper that never opens, or lint caught on the siding means it is not. Clothes still damp after a full cycle is the other tell.

Some calls are not worth making. A new dryer, with a short straight duct, cleaned last season, is fine. Gas dryers are different. A blocked vent can push exhaust back into the laundry room, so those get looked at sooner.
